Australia

3rd Jul 2018

This week we have started to learn all about Australia as part of the school’s International Week.

The children began by locating Australia on a map, in atlases and on a globe.

They discovered that Australia is an island and is split into different areas or 'states'.

They also thought about how they might travel there.

They learned about the Australian flag and discovered what the stars represent and why it has the Union Flag in the top left-hand corner.

We have also been learning about the indigenous peoples of Australia who have lived in the land we now call Australia for thousands of years as well Captain Cook and the European settlers who arrived in Australia a few hundred years ago.

The children have studied Aboriginal art, and explored how it is created. They have learned that the art is a special form of story telling and created their own a piece of art.

Later in the week the children will be learning about Australian animals and listening to a lovely Australian story that features lots of animals.

As there is so \much to learn we will be continuing our work into next week.

We are all loving it so far!
