Consultation: Relationships and Sex Education

15th Nov 2020

As you may be aware, Relationship Education became statutory for all primary schools from September 2020, though because the lockdown closed all schools additional time has been given for it to be implemented fully.

Our school is joining other Catholic schools across Sheffield (and the country) to engage the 'Life to the Full' programme, a new Relationship Education programme, created specifically for Catholic primary schools.

The 'Life to the Full' programme is based on ‘A Model Catholic RSE Curriculum’ created by the Catholic Education Service which has been highlighted as a work of good practice by the Department for Education.

Prior to adopting ‘Life to the Full’ here at SJF, we researched several programmes, including an excellent one planned for Sheffield schools. In the end we felt that the ‘Life to the Full’ programme aligned best with our Catholic ethos and values in supporting our children’s growth, development and overall formation.

Life to the Full is much more than a simple series of lessons. It is an entire platform of creative resources designed to engage, inform and inspire our children.

These include interactive video content; story-based activities; employing a wide range of teaching tools; original worship music; and an accompanying programme of classroom prayers.

Additionally, there is an online parent platform so that parents/carers can also engage with the programme in order to support their children at home.

Here at SJF we want to give you an overview of this new and ambitious programme before it is introduced, and so a separate letter, that will include log-on details, will be sent out so parents/carers can take a look at what is planned.

You will note that all the modules have been considered carefully and broken down into units of work for children to go through and complete over time.

Module 1: Created and Loved by God

  • Religious Understanding
  • Me, My Body, My Health
  • Emotional Well-Being
  • Life Cycles

Module 2: Created to Love Others

  • Religious Understanding
  • Personal Relationship
  • Keeping Safe

Module 3: Created to Live in Community

  • Religious Understanding
  • Living in the Wider World

Life to the Full is intended to be a rich partnership between home, school and church that will support each child fully, which underpins our wish to consult with you.

When you have viewed the material you will be able to share your questions and feedback with us via a google questionnaire that we will send you.

The course will not start until after Christmas, so that we have plenty of time to review and act on the feedback.
