Y1 English: Our Key Text and Simple Sentences

4th Nov 2024

Our Y1 children had a surprise left in class today. When the parcels were opened they found a meerkat toy and a wonderful new book called 'Meerkat Mail'.

The children had a good think about what the book might be about and made their own predictions, based on the cover.

Once we had enjoyed the book together, the children learned that the meerkat character in the book was called Sunny, and he lived in the Kalahari desert, in a country called Namibia, in south-west Africa, which they located on a map.

The children wondered about the book and their wonders included:

  • Are meerkats scary?
  • What do meerkats eat?
  • Where will Sunny go?

As we read more of the book the children will hopefully discover the answers to these fantastic questions.

More broadly, our focus in English is for the children to continue practising writing simple sentences, after speaking the sentence before writing it - remembering to include finger spaces, full stops and starting to use capital letters too, if they can. The children will also begin to identify the nouns in sentences too.
