Y1 Geography: Improving the Local Area

30th Mar 2022

Today we thought about what we liked and disliked about the local area. An example was that the green spaces were good but they were not always pretty to look at.

We then reflected and wanted to consider how the children's choice of features could be further improved. So, in groups they shared their thoughts about the field, other green spaces, the tram provision, the shops and the local pub.

Some of the children's ideas for improving the area included:

  • allow children in the pub and create play good areas
  • add a fence, slide and sand pit to the field
  • plant more flowers and add more 'poo bins' to the green spaces
  • add a bike rack and more regular trams to the tram provision

The children really engaged well so much so that, in the end, we had to extend the lesson in order to allow them to get as much valuable learning from the lesson as possible. Mrs Hadfield and Mrs Sambrook agreed that they wished the children really did have the power to transform some of their ideas into reality, because they were so great!
