The investment in high quality library, reading and phonics books to engage children and support their reading journeys, remains a huge priority for us, in spite of the fact that money is extremely tight for all schools currently.

I am sorry to say that too many of our books, including brand new reading and phonics books, are not being returned on time, meaning that they are not available for others who need them. A number have been reported lost by parents/carers. Too many are returned in a poor state, with torn or missing pages, or in some cases they come back covered in dried-on food, or stained and wrinkled because of liquid spills.

We accept that accidents happen, and we also expect reasonable wear and tear. However, the number of late, lost and damaged books is beyond what is reasonable and getting beyond what is sustainable too.

All books are precious, and children need to be encouraged to look after them properly - both in school and at home. We need everyone to support us with this by ensuring that the books their children bring home are looked after and treated properly, and then returned on time, on the correct day.

A reminder that when library, reading and phonics books are lost - or are kept long after they were supposed to be returned, so they have to replaced, or when they are damaged beyond what is reasonable wear and tear, we will ask the relevant parents and carers to pay for new ones. Thank you.
