Y1 Mathematics: Investigating 3D shapes

17th Nov 2024

Following on from last week's focus on recognising and naming 2D shapes, this week the children began learning more about 3D shapes.

- - - - -

A 3D (or three-dimensional) shape is a solid shape that may have flat faces or curved surfaces, edges and vertices (or corners).

- - - - -

Our children were challenged to make a tall tower after first thinking carefully about which 3D shapes were more appropriate and then talking about their choices with us.

In the end we decided that shapes with flat faces were probably best as shapes such as spheres had curved surfaces and were harder to stack.
