Y1 Science: Investigating Materials

12th Jan 2024

This week the children have been thinking scientifically about the properties of different materials.

They began by determining difference between object and materials, for example,

"It is a pen and its material is plastic."

In pairs the children then embarked on a material hunt, each pair having been given their own material to find.

In the coming weeks the children investigate the properties of different materials and consider why they are appropriate for the the object. For example:

"It is a window. The material used to make it is glass, and glass is hard, transparent and usually smooth when used for windows."

Why not go on your own hunt at home with your child? Try to name

1. name the object

2. name the material(s) used to make it

3. describe the properties of the materials used to make the object

You might find it useful to use words like: hard, soft, rigid, flexible, smooth, rough, transparent, opaque, dull, shiny. Can you can think of some more words of your own, to describe the properties of materials and objects?
