Y1 Science: Investigating Materials

20th Mar 2024

The children had fun investigating materials, focusing, in our lesson on flexibility and elasticity of each of the items they were studying.

Firstly they sorted a range of objects by whether they are rigid or flexible. They then focused on the flexible objects and investigated how they were able to bend, stretch, twist, push, pull and roll them. They investigated

  • playdough
  • plasticine
  • blue-tac
  • sponges
  • different balls
  • elastic bands
  • salt-dough

The children then used the flexibility of salt-dough - and by rolling, manipulating and cutting it - they each made their own decorations. These are drying, currently, and the children will go back to investigate the changes and consider whether they remain flexible or not, next week, and will discuss their observations and thoughts about what has happened and why.
