Y1 Science: Investigating What Animals Eat

20th Nov 2023

In our science investigation the children really impressed us by recalling lots of key facts about different animal groups - from last week's learning. This included remembering that birds are warm-blooded; that amphibians can live on land or in water; that fish have fins and gills; that mammals have hair or fur, and have babies that drink their mother's milk; and finally that reptiles have scales and lay eggs.

The children were then encouraged to think about animal they would like to be. and were excited, until they learned about what they ate (their diet).

The children were introduced to key vocabulary:

  • carnivore
  • herbivore
  • omnivore

Using pictures to support them, the children then worked in groups, to discuss the diets of different animals and identify the categories that they belonged in. They then continued the conversations as they completed an individual sorting activity.
