Y3 Science: Our Flower Experiment

5th Jul 2024

Aim: to demonstrate that water travels through the stem to the petals of a flower

Our young Y3 scientists were shown a multicoloured flower that had been created by leaving a white flower in different coloured food colourings.

The children examined and commented on the flower, considering how unusual was and why. They also reflected on whether they had ever seen a flower like it in nature. The children decided that the multicoloured flower was unnatural, and so they explored how the flower became coloured in that way.

Each group was given a white flower and a jar of coloured water. The children photographed their flowers at the start of the experiment, before leaving their flowers overnight. The next day they discovered that things had changed.

Take a look at what they discovered.
