SJF Book of the Week (for younger children)

2nd May 2021

This week’s recommendation for our younger children is ‘Grumpy Monkey’ by Suzanne Lang.

Jim the chimpanzee is in such a terrible mood for no particular reason. He just is.

His friends do not understand why because it is such a beautiful day. They try and encourage him to smile and be happy by doing things that are fun, but Jim cannot help the way he feels. Could it be that he just needs a day to feel grumpy?

Suzanne Lang has written a book for younger children that explores what can happen if we bottle up our feelings and try to put on a happy face when really, we feel sad or even cross inside. It reassures young readers that they are allowed to feel their feelings whilst being careful not to hurt others in the process!
