SJF Eco Team Update

29th Sep 2024
Here is a word from Mrs Steenson

This week, our Eco Team met to complete our annual School Environmental Review. The team worked together to answer questions about our healthy-living values, energy and water consumption, waste and recycling policies - and many other topics.

The team asked some very important questions, including:
  • Do we encourage insect and animal life in our school grounds?
  • Are there enough regularly emptied bins around our school?
  • How do pupils take part in daily exercise as part of a healthy lifestyle?
  • Do we have safe and dry places to store bicycles and scooters to promote healthy transport choices?

The team worked well together, answering all the questions, and even conducted interviews with members of staff to help them with reflect on some of the more in-depth issues.

The questions included:
  • Does our school use environmentally-friendly cleaning products?
  • Does our school buy Fairtrade products where possible?
  • Do we have self-stopping taps in use at school?
  • Is the fish used for our school dinners sourced sustainably?

Chloe, in Y4, already has some super ideas about the global threat of biodiversity. “I wasn’t sure that enough pupils in school will know what it was when we answered questions about it, in the review. I think we should find a way to tell them. We could hold an assembly, create posters or ask our teachers to include it in some lessons.”

Chloe and the rest of the Team will meet again next week to discuss the outcomes of our Environmental Review, which will be shared next week. We will also share our collective comments about where we want to celebrate what we’re doing well, as well as looking at the small areas we can work on in the future.
