Summer Holiday Reading Challenge

16th Jul 2021

Summer Holiday Reading

This year we are challenging all our children and families to again take part in the Summer Reading Challenge along with all the the other Sheffield primary schools!

We want to continue encouraging our children to read for pleasure!

The summer holiday is a fantastic opportunity to spend some time to relax with a good book; to enjoy reading; to discover new authors, genres and exciting new worlds of fiction and non-fiction.

We know reading for pleasure is really important for developing key reading skills which can impact so positively on children's learning, development, progress and achievement throughout their lives.

So the challenge is for every member of our SJF family (children, parents and carers), to read at least three new books this summer - of any sort - so that by the time September comes around you are able to answer the following questions:

  1. What is your favourite genre of book? - adventure, mystery, funny, poetry, historical etc
  2. What is your favourite sort of book to read? - fiction, non-fiction, picture book, comic/graphic novel
  3. Who is one of your favourite authors?
  4. What is the title of one of your favourite books?
  5. Which book would you recommend to a friend? Why?

To help you begin this challenge we would encourage you to sign up to your local library if you haven’t already as reading as a hobby can be expensive! Please click here: https://www.sheffield.gov.uk/home/libraries-archives/join-the-library

You can also sign up for the Summer Reading Challenge to help you, which you can sign up to in your local library or online https://summerreadingchallenge.org.uk/ where you can earn badges, play games and get a certificate at the end of the summer.

So enjoy reading this summer and we look forward to talking about the reading you enjoyed and sharing child and adult book recommendations in September.

Happy reading!
