Sun Smart
Whilst we welcome the warmer, sunny weather, we have to be mindful that too much sun can pose its own risks to children.
Sun Cream/Spray
On days when the weather is forecast to be hot and sunny, please apply suitable protective sun cream at home before school. There are a range of long-lasting creams and sprays that can be used for this purpose. Please do not send your child in with sun creams and sprays for them or someone else to apply during the day.
For exceptional cases please arrange to speak to Mrs Grayson or Mrs Ramsden about a care plan if there are compelling medical reasons why your child needs cream/spray applied during the school day.
Water
Children are encouraged to bring water with them to school. They can drink as much water as they need, when they need, and will be reminded by staff. Children can refill their water bottles as often as they need to. Children who forget their water bottles will be provided with cups and will be able to drink as much as they need to. During lessons the children will continue to take regular water-breaks to ensure that they remain hydrated.
The Building
Classrooms and other spaces will be kept well ventilated with all windows and doors across the school remaining open to encourage airflow throughout the building. Blinds in classrooms will remain closed to try and reduce any glare. Children will use shadier areas outside for learning, but if the weather is too hot, they will remain inside, in the cool.
Breaktimes & Lunchtimes
At break and lunchtimes, the children will remain either inside or under appropriate shade outside, if the weather is hot.
Clothing
Children should come to school wearing an appropriate hat to protect them from the sun. Baseball caps, bucket hats and wider brimmed sun hats are best. Pupils must continue to wear school uniform unless parents/carers have been directed otherwise. On hot days those wearing shirts and ties will be told by school staff to remove their ties and undo the top buttons of their shirts. Children must not come to school with bare feet or wearing open sandals, sliders or flipflops. Pupils must wear closed school shoes, because of the protection they provide.
Thank you.
