Y5 Science: Super Space Science!

20th Sep 2024

This week we our Y5 scientists began their exciting new topic, 'All About Earth and Space!'.

On Monday we investigated the distance between the sun and Earth - and all the other planets. The children decided to have a look at these distances using a scale. They then went out into the playground, and, using the planters as the Sun, they we measured the relative distance from there to how far the different planets are away from it. For example, for Mercury, it was a few centimetres, whilst or Neptune it was 20 metres!

The children also discovered that the Sun is the closest star to Earth and that our Earth is known as the Blue planet as it looks blue from space. Earth is also known as the 'Goldilocks planet' as it is just far enough away from the sun to not be too hot nor too cold - it is just right!

The children started their own personal moon diaries, which the will use to check the shape of the moon each night to see how it changes. They were rewarded for their efforts this week with a super moon on Tuesday. This means the Moon is the closest that it can be to Earth.

Chenai has also done some extra research and produced a fantastic representation of the Solar System.
