Y2 Science: What are the best conditions for growing sunflower seeds?

13th May 2021

The Year 2 children set up an experiment to test which were the best conditions for growing sunflower seeds:

  • sun, soil and water;
  • sun, soil and no water;
  • no sun, soil and water; or
  • no sun, soil and no water.

The children found it really interesting and enjoyed looking at the results and comparing each plant pot.

They discovered that sunflowers grow best with sun, soil and water. However they also learned that seeds will also grow in the dark with soil and water, but the plant will not have the same green colour because it has not received the nutrients it needs in order to be healthy.
