Y2 English: Past Progressive Tense

15th Mar 2021

This week the children will be introduced to the term past progressive.

Past progressive describes an ongoing action that was happening at some point in the past and is no longer happening now.

The past progressive is formed using the auxiliary verb ‘to be’ in the past tense, followed by the present participle of the verb in the sentence.

For example: I was riding my scooter

The children need to be able to recognise the past progressive tense within sentences and be able to explain when it is used.

They should be able to identify the progressive past in its simple form.

Focused questions they will need to answer are:
What is the past progressive tense?
What would you look for when deciding if a sentence is in the past progressive form?
Is this sentence in the past progressive form? How do you know?

This helpful video will show some past progressive sentences:

Pope Francis (1936-2025)
Eternal rest,
Grant unto him, O Lord,
And let perpetual light shine upon him.
May he rest, in peace.
Amen
