Y2 English: Past Progressive Tense

This week the children will be introduced to the term past progressive.


Past progressive describes an ongoing action that was happening at some point in the past and is no longer happening now.

The past progressive is formed using the auxiliary verb ‘to be’ in the past tense, followed by the present participle of the verb in the sentence.

For example: I was riding my scooter


The children need to be able to recognise the past progressive tense within sentences and be able to explain when it is used.

They should be able to identify the progressive past in its simple form.

Focused questions they will need to answer are:
What is the past progressive tense?
What would you look for when deciding if a sentence is in the past progressive form?
Is this sentence in the past progressive form? How do you know?
